A Note from Early Matters Coordinator, Jena Wells
Happy September! I hope you had a great day celebrating with thousands of your friends at the Buddy Walk! What a positively overwhelming day! I cry every year and it amazes me how many people are touched by the lives of those with Down syndrome. There is so much joy and love and laughter at Sawyer Point and Yeatman’s Cove! It’s just so fun! Please tell us your favorite story or part of the Buddy Walk. Please post to the Early Matters Facebook page. If you do, you will get entered in a drawing! If you are not on Facebook, then email me your answer! You will still be entered into the drawing. I can’t wait to hear more about your experience!

Healthcare Guidelines
At each home visit, I give out the Medical Healthcare Guidelines. These are important for us to know because we can follow along and make sure these checks and balances are occurring. I have missed some important testing for Ashton and so has his pediatrician. We help each other and make sure we don’t forget!

On Wednesday, there was a webinar through Global Down Syndrome Foundation. They are based in Denver, CO and are dedicated to significantly improving the lives of people with Down syndrome through RESEARCH, MEDICAL CARE, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY. This webinar had a lot of great information that you may be interested in learning about. The actual recording of the webinar is not out yet, but here is the link to the powerpoint (click here).

Below, you will find a one sheet page of the guidelines. These guidelines are followed closely by the Thomas Center, but it is a good idea to give your pediatrician a copy of them, too. For the official pediatric document, please click here.

If you have further questions about the Medical Healthcare Guidelines, please feel free to reach out to me and I can direct your question to our Health Advisory Committee.

Wow - Buddy Walk Cincinnati was record-breaking!
Together, we raised over $694,000 to continue our mission of empowering individuals, educating families, enhancing communities, and together, celebrating the extraordinary lives of people with Down syndrome! Over 12,000 people attended the walk on Saturday to show support for our community! We are the largest walk for Down syndrome in the country! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Practical Tips for Implementing Reinforcement at Home
presented by Key Behavior Services, LLC

When: Saturday, September 28
Where: Blue Ash Library Meeting Room
Time: 10 AM - 2 PM

The presentation will cover the use of reinforcement and positive consequences to improve behavior. When your child misbehaves, rewards might be the last thing on your mind. But positive reinforcement can be one of the most effective behavior modification techniques. Positive reinforcement can be used to encourage desired behaviors such as sharing, following directions, or even completing chores without arguing. It can also be used to prevent misbehavior, like hitting or rule violations. This workshop will review practical strategies for implementing reinforcement that parents can use at home.
