Tips for Creating Positive Communication with Your School

 It benefits everyone!

Now that the school year is off and running, it’s a great time to work on creating a positive relationship with your child’s teacher.  The benefits span your child’s entire team, including you, the teachers, the therapists, and your child!  Here is a list of some simple tips to consider:

  • Meet with the teacher, aides, therapists close to the beginning of the school year so that everyone is on the same page with how your child’s school day looks!
  • Provide a “Getting To Know Me” packet to your child’s team.  Keep the packet simple with fun pictures and brief explanations of your child’s likes/dislikes, friends, family members (including the family pet), favorite foods, favorite activities, etc.
  • Ask the teacher what his/her preferred mode of communication is.  Acknowledge the fact that you know they are busy with many students and so you would like to accommodate their preferred way of communicating.  This helps you look like a team player!
  • Remember that teachers and therapists are busy and they have more than just one student.  So, be reasonable but respectful if it takes them a bit to get back to you.
  • Be sure to point out the positives that they are doing throughout the year.  Everyone appreciates a compliment now and then.
  • This may be difficult if you are a working parent, but show up for field trips/conferences/school events whenever possible.  Teachers might feel more comfortable approaching you with questions or concerns if they get to know you first.
  • If you’re not able to attend daytime events, consider joining the PTA or hosting an informational night for teachers.
