In some ways, the adoption journey can be much like a puzzle.
For the expectant parent receiving a diagnosis of Down syndrome, it can feel like the puzzle pieces are scattered across the table, some still upside down. They may not be able to see the big picture. It is unclear how all of the pieces will fit together. They do not know where to even begin. The National Down Syndrome Adoption Network (NDSAN) helps put the pieces together. The NDSAN helps them see what the future may look like for their child, for their family. They may decide to parent. They may decide to make an adoption plan.
For the adoptive family, they have the final picture in their mind, but the pieces remain spread out on the table. “How do we get a home study?” “What will the costs be?” “How do we make the best family profile?” The NDSAN can help adoptive families understand how all of the pieces come together. The NDSAN also serves as the connector between families and children.
With each of these pictures, there is a missing piece-YOU! You can make the big picture become a reality. Each year approximately 90 families or agencies contact the NDSAN and, at any given time, there are approximately 40 adoptive families on the registry. Each of these families need help putting together the pieces of their family puzzle.
